Annual Report

Holy Trinity Cuba Committee 2003 Annual Report 2004 Harold E. Nugent

With the grace of God and under the auspices of the Outreach Commission, the Holy Trinity Cuba Committee (HTCC) has been active this year even though we lost three key members, Nancy Galloway, and Ginny and David Bushnell.  All three migrated to New Mexico last year. Highlights of the year follow:

  1. Harold and Susan Nugent reported to the parishioners on their trip to Cuba to work on repairing Episcopal Churches. They brought with them 55 pounds of medicine as well as clothing and funds for distribution.
  2. One or two members of Holy Trinity Cuban Committee attended nearly all the monthly meetings of the Diocesan Cuba Committee (DCC) held at St. James Church in Lake City.
  3. With the support of Father Gordon and the Outreach Commission, we sent $300 to the Diocese of Cuba to increase the salary of Rev. Alberto Alfredo Nunno, priest of our companion parish, St. John the Baptist in Florencia, Cuba. We hope to continue this funding yearly.  This increased his salary from $25 to $50 a month.  More funding is needed for his gasoline bills to the several churches and missions that he serves.
  4. One of our many blessed highlights of the year was the arrival of Joy Lewis and Alberto Mendez to Holy Trinity, and subsequently to membership in HTCC and Diocesan Cuba Committee.  This God-given occurrence came about when Father Jim and Leo Dugger signed them up in the Shepherd Ministry.   They are graduate students at Uof F, and fluent speakers of Spanish.  Alberto has his law degree from Mexico and Joy is working on her masters in teaching Spanish. They are planning to accompany Julie Sullivan, Chair of DCC, to Cuba on their spring break in March and will be reporting to Holy Trinity when they get back.
  5. Another blessing is that as a result of the recent church survey, five other people have expressed interest in the Cuba Committee.  A meeting will be announced soon and anyone interested in hearing about our Companion Diocese is welcome to attend.
  6. The Outreach Commission sent Harold Nugent to a national meeting in Washington, DC, of those Episcopalians interested in developing further our relationship with the Episcopal Church of Cuba and its wonderful and devote parishioners who often worship under some close to deprived conditions.  Harold attended services at St. Johnıs Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square and at one service exchanged The Peace with President Bush.
  7. Our last accomplishment is still in progress.  That is, thanks to Bunnie James, HT Webmaster, we have in the making a HTCC website linked under the Outreach Commission.  Please visit it for a brief history of the Episcopal Church in Cuba, a two-page up-date of problems and proposed solutions in our Companion Diocese as well as pictures of the work of Episcopal Church of United States (ECUS) with the Episcopal Church in Cuba(ECC).

In conclusion, with the Godıs gift of the addition of several new members to the HTCC and the continued support of the parish, we should be able to again play a substantial role in strengthening Holy Trinityıs and the Diocese of Floridaıs role in Godıs work with this very worthy mission.  Call Harold Nugent at 352-376-6925 or HENugent @aol.com for more information.
